Troubleshooting online donations

Encountering difficulties completing your online donation? We understand your frustration and are here to assist you. Please review the following information to identify and resolve any obstacles encountered during the donation process.

There are two stages to the donation process. The first stage is on the donations page where you choose where you would like to direct the donation. The second stage is after you have been redirected to PayPal's secure payment gateway.

Which stage are you experiencing the issue?

  • Issue with the donations page
  • Issue with PayPal's website

Donations page

There are two steps on the donations page. The first step is choosing where you would like to direct your donation (if not already pre-selected via a donation link or button). A dropdown list of congregations should appear upon typing the third letter of the name of the congregation. For example, typing 'Abe' will start to show Abercorn, Aberdalgie etc.

If the donations page form submits successfully but does not redirect to PayPal, or if your congregation is not listed or cannot be selected, please do not hesitate to contact us at webenquiries@churchofscotland.org.uk

Common error messages and resolutions

Transfer Exceeds Weekly Limit: Your donation amount surpasses your current weekly transfer limit. Please refer to PayPal's Fees page for details regarding minimum/maximum transfer amounts and associated fees.

Transaction Failure: Technical issues may temporarily impede transaction completion. Please attempt the donation again shortly. If the issue persists, kindly contact PayPal customer support.

Account Limitations: Restrictions may be placed on your PayPal account, hindering transfers. Please investigate and resolve any existing account limitations to restore full functionality.

Bank Account Mismatch: Disparities between your entered bank information and your bank records may be causing the error. Double-check all details for accuracy. If the issue persists, unlink and relink your bank account with PayPal.

Alternative transfer methods

Should the initial transfer method remain unsuccessful, consider these alternative options:

  • Link an eligible debit card: Certain debit cards may facilitate instant transfers. Please consult your bank and PayPal regarding compatible cards
  • Link a bank account: Standard or instant transfers may be possible through a linked bank account. Again, consult your bank and PayPal for compatibility information.

Pending transfers

Do not be alarmed if your donation status appears as "Pending." This indicates a standard internal review process that may require additional time. You will be notified upon completion of the review and successful transfer of your donation.

Maintaining account information

To minimise the need for future troubleshooting, we recommend regularly reviewing and updating your PayPal account information to ensure accuracy and facilitate seamless transactions.

Further PayPal assistance

For technical difficulties beyond the scope of this information, or for assistance with specific account issues, please contact PayPal customer support via their official communication channels.
