Advent Day 16: Kirk ministers present new Christmas hymn 'Holy Jesus'

A newly written Christmas hymn, ‘Holy Jesus’, has been written and recorded by Kirk ministers Rev Alec Shuttleworth and Rev Dr Robin Hill for this year.

All four people involved in the production are members of the Church of Scotland’s much-loved Heart and Soul Swing Band which, sadly, has not been able to perform live for many months.

Rev Dr Robin Hill, the minister at Gladsmuir linked with Longniddry, said:

“The idea for the song came when our dear friend and partner in crime, Huw Thomas, recommended a hymn tune (Yr Hun Gan, CH4 number 590) to us.

“We loved the sound of it and thought it would be great for a Christmas hymn. And so Alec and I set out on the writing process, arriving at a hymn which tied the manger of Bethlehem in with the cross of Calvary.

“Alec and Huw then recorded it; Alec in Kincardine with some groovy graphics, and Huw in Queensferry on his piano. This was then sent to ace third year film-making student, Alastair Clarke from Longniddry, for production.”

Lyrics to ‘Holy Jesus’

Holy Jesus, God Incarnate,
sleeping now in peaceful rest.
Mary’s loving eyes to watch you,
Child and Mother heaven-blest.
Star and angel knew your glory,
shepherds worshipped where you lay.
Through the darkening chill of winter
slumber safely while you may.

Holy Jesus, wise men travel
with their gifts so rich and fine.
First, the gold to speak of kingship;
frankincense of power divine;
then the myrrh, a gift prophetic,
pointing out a mystery:
in your start an end envisaged;
life and death in unity.

Holy Jesus, here among us,
sent from God for our own good.
Bread of Life that will be broken
on a cross of rough-hewn wood.
In the wine-red blood of suffering
we will see your love's true way.
May we join your path to Easter,
setting out on Christmas Day.
