Advent Day 13: What A Beautiful Gift
Published on 11 December 2020
A minister who thought his days of writing and recording music were over has written and released a song and video that celebrates the gift of new life.
Rev Ken Donald, minister for Prestongrange Parish Church in East Lothian, first wrote songs in the 1980s, when he was a singer-songwriter mixing a twang of country with the sounds of rock and gospel music.
This year, inspired by the joy of welcoming the births of his own grandchildren, Ken picked up his guitar to record his latest number "What a Beautiful Gift" with a few musicians from his church.
"It started as a family song," he says. "I was thinking about the wonderful gift children are and how grateful we are to have them in our lives. I hope the song will help people feel joy in the preciousness of new-born life and in the pleasure and love it brings to us.
"Life is to be treasured."
Married to Moira for 36 years, Ken has five children and six grandchildren.
"God has richly blessed us," he says.
Ken's ministry has taken him to congregations in East and West Wemyss, as well as to Wester Hailes, Edinburgh; Kincardine, Fife; and a housing development in Aberdeen. He also spent 11 months working in a hostel for homeless people in the Cowgate, Edinburgh. Ken remains passionate about ministry and loves to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
"Being a Christian is one of the most exciting and challenging things that anyone could ever experience," he says. "Meeting Jesus is life-changing."
You can download the song for £0.99 from Amazon Music and from other major music platforms including Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. All proceeds will go to Bliss Scotland for the care of premature and sick babies.
