STARTERS FOR SUNDAY: AN INTRODUCTION
About this material
Knowing that needs vary from church to church, we offer
each week a mix of different kinds of material to choose
from, some original, some borrowed. It is not the intention
to provide complete material but something for individuals
and congregations to develop in their own situations.
Sometimes there may be background material to the readings,
at other times it may be ideas for deepening prayer, or
involving children, or using drama. Always we will try
and make musical suggestions.
| For somewhere to start, we've used
the Revised
Common Lectionary, the widest used across the
churches. This is the one printed in Common
Order, the service book of the Church
of Scotland. Where a Sunday is special in some way
(a Christian festival or one with an emphasis on
a social issue), we will respond to that. Your suggestions
and material are always welcome. |

Other resources
Here are three helpful resources we have heard about that
apply to all Sundays. Let us know if would you like to
suggest others. Please note that all links to external
websites will take you out of the Church of Scotland website
and open a new browser window.

With Love to the World
is a quarterly booklet widely used in Australia
and spreading to other countries. It consists of
daily readings based on the Revised Common Lectionary
but with a useful and accessible short commentary
on each one, written by biblical scholars and working
parish ministers.
It is issued four times a year and can be obtained
from the Office
for Worship and Doctrine at the very favourable
price of £2.50 for single copies or through
an annual subscription of £10 for the four
issues. |

Sunday by Sunday
is a very comprehensive musical resource which goes
to all whose congregations are affiliated to the
Royal School of Church Music, or who themselves
are individual members. It is lectionary based,
has comment on one of the readings, lists the different
settings of the psalm for the day, with hymns, songs,
anthems, organ music, Taize, Iona and world music,
and songs for children. For more information visit
