PRAY NOW: TODAY'S PRAYER

Manna - food for the journey

'I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.'

Exodus 16:4

Prayer

These are testing times, God.

Every bit of news is bleak and ominous:
'Redundancy, recession, debt and devastation.'

Everyday the rain pours, dark and depressing:
'Cold snap, worst for years, stay in if you can.'

Every silver lining has a cloud:
'Just when you thought the end was in sight, now this.'

Like the Israelites we wonder:
Were we better off before?
What's the point of being here?
Can we take any more?

God forgive our lack of hope,
our short memory,
our selfish perspective.
For you hear our cries,
in the midst of our panic and complaints you speak:
spurring us on, opening the road
saying
enough for today, enough for today,
if you will journey - I will provide.

Readings

Matthew 4:1–11 The temptation of Jesus
John 6:25–59 Jesus the Bread of Life

Prayer activity

Say the Lord's Prayer out loud or silently in your head. Pause after the line 'Give us this day our daily bread' - let this thought resonate with you throughout the day.

Prayer for the Church

As we care for people in community who need social support and fulfil Christ's command to love our neighbour

especially those involved in the Social Care Council and its practical wing 'Crossreach', with caring units across Scotland.

Blessing

Eat this bread, drink this cup,
Come to me and never be hungry.
Eat this bread, drink this cup,
Trust in me and you will not thirst.
