PRAY NOW: TODAY'S PRAYER

Astonishing relationships - woman at the well and Jesus

A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink.'

John 4:7

Prayer

Loving Jesus, in our misunderstanding,
meet us.
Loving Jesus, in our secret lives,
meet us.
Loving Jesus, in our solitary living,
meet us.

Meet us with the full force of heaven,
gently,
with a grace-filled moment and a living word,
that speaks into all living deserts:
the dryness of our relationships,
the barrenness of our community,
the solitariness of our culture
to every woman enslaved,
to every asylum seeker turned away,
to every child abandoned.

Water these deserts,
not just with water,
but with living water,
that each may never thirst again,
that this world may never thirst again.

Loving Jesus, in our thirst for connection,
within a community disconnected,
may we pass the cup abundantly
and with reckless generosity.

Readings

John 4:1-30 The Samaritan woman at the well
Luke 4:16-21 The community of God's realm
Acts 2:43-7 Life of the early community
Numbers 20:1-13 Water from rock in the desert

Prayer activity

Place a cup of water before you. Reflect on it, how it gives life and how it can equally harm with disease and flood. Give thanks for its life-giving properties and pray for those affected by the harm it can bring. Drink the water and hear Jesus words to us: I am the water of life.

Prayer for the Church

Those who bring their creativity to bear on making known the Church and the Gospel in print, news media, sound and website.

Blessing

May God fill every cup you drink
with life and eternity
in equal handfuls.
