PRAY NOW: TODAY'S PRAYER

Relationships of Challenge - Jacob and Esau

Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be divided; one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger.
Genesis 25:23

Prayer

From the time they were in the womb, there was struggle.
From the moment there were two, there was rivalry.
Right from the start there was the challenge,
Who would be first? Who was the strongest?
Who could outsmart the other?

God, today we see how, even siblings whose lives begin together,
In humanity are hot on the heels of ambition and success.
Today we struggle with the thoughts that:
Parents often take sides,
Children can emotionally blackmail parents,
In-laws can make life miserable for families,
Brothers and sisters sometimes lie and deceive each other.

God, in the struggle of the story,
In the tangles of families,
In the complexities of relationships.
Help us know where real strength lies.
Help us find honest blessing in our relationships
today and always. Amen.

Readings

Genesis 25:19-34
Genesis 27

Prayer activity

Genesis 26:38 says, 'Have you only one blessing?' As Esau asks his father this, ask yourself the same question. How many blessings do you have? Is there one you think you want so much so you are not noticing other blessings in your life?

Prayer for the Church

Those who encourage and assist congregations in the development and exploration ofpatterns of mission and congregational life appropriate to their own context

especially the Scottish Churches' Community Trust and the Parish Development Fund.

Blessing

Count your blessings name them one by one,
Count your blessings see what God has done,
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
