Why remember?

When families gather, they confirm their identity with stories, memories and anecdotes – sometimes even sagas. They may be about people who are there, or about members of the family who are too far away to come, or about those who have died. What people find funny or moving or instructive says a lot about what they consider important, about who they are.

The wider gathering of the Church can find in the stories of those who have lived the faith in times past, in similar circumstances or in very different ones, support and affirmation and encouragement, and even entertainment. From their vantage point in history, these predecessors can point us forward.

Image of John Knox preaching

The life of the Scottish church is rich in story and we lose a great deal if we allow their witness to drain away and be forgotten. This feature draws on the great figures and events of the past, from the very surroundings we know well and from the world church, looking for understanding, courage, help with prayer, new reserves of love for difficult times. Where possible, there is an entry for each day of the current month.

This section has been provided by the Office for Worship and Doctrine, part of the Mission and Discipleship Council.
