Church Hymnary Fourth Edition (CH4)
A new edition of the Church Hymnary was published in May
2005.
 |
CH4
consists of a music edition priced at £27,
a melody edition (the main edition, £16),
a Words only edition at £12, and a large
print edition at £20. The book has
a wide range of contents, from traditional hymns
to worship songs and short chants. |
There are many new hymns in a traditional hymn format
but engaging with issues of faith and life in the contemporary
world. There are also many songs from other parts of the
world church. And there are some great new tunes. A special
feature is the reinstatement of the psalms at the front
of the book, in a variety of settings.
The Braille edition of CH4 is now available and can
be ordered via the Office for Worship and Doctrine by
email on wordoc@cofscotland.org.uk
or by telephoning 0131 225 5722, extension 359.
The Church Hymnary Trust and their publisher Canterbury-SCM
Press are to bring out a CD-Rom which will enable congregations
to download words and music. It is hoped that this will
not only provide words for order of service sheets and
overhead/Power Point projection but also:
- enable those choosing hymns to hear the melody played
over for identification purposes;
- if possible, make it possible for churches without
organists to accompany singing through a MIDI system;
and
- allow the transfer of music into locally-held music
software so that parts can be transposed for instruments.
However, the publisher has been experiencing great
difficulty in getting permission from copyright holders
for such a provision and negotiations are still going
on, therefore, there is a delay in providing this. Discussion
has also taken place regarding the provision of sol-fa
versions of tunes, as well as background information
about writers and composers. It is likely that this
would not be in the original CD-Rom but available later
as updates.
The music, melody, words only and large
print editions are now available from bookshops.
