Troubleshooting problems
Slow starting
Initial connection can be slow, up to several seconds/minutes
during which time the computer stores information locally
(buffering). Please be patient as the system often speeds
up after a while.
Intermittent poor quality
Internet congestion can cause bottle necks over the
Internet, this is beyond our control, please bear with
us.
Continuous poor quality
Lower performance computers have difficulty with this
technology, though audio should still be available.
A slight blurring of picture is quite common.
No sound
Check speaker connections, power supply and volume controls.
No video
Check Media Player or QuickTime is installed correctly,
if test file worked well previously, the site may temporarily
be unavailable (Error file not found maybe seen). Please
try later.
Further help - If you
are still experiencing difficulties, further help is
available within Window's Media help files or on Microsoft.com
website here or the QuickTime
website and doing a search. Please note these links
will take you out of the Church of Scotland website
and open a new browser window. Some frequently asked
questions are outlined below.

F.A.Q.'s
Why can't I connect over a network
With most networks you can, but some have protection software
(firewall) requiring appropriate configuration to receive
various types of webcast streams. Live streams and video
archives require different firewall/port settings so you
may receive one type and not the other. For technical
administrators, firewall configuration information is
available here.
I have broadband connection,
so why is the quality still poor?
The archived video clips have been encoded for 56k modems
with preference for audio. Internet congestion or your
local settings may be the problem.
Why is the video picture very
blocky?
The larger the picture the more picture-blocking occurs.
Try reducing the picture size. Advanced users with fast
CPU computers can tweak Media Player by going to Tools,
Options, Performance and following Microsoft's setting
instructions.
The picture stops, but the audio
continues: why is this?
Internet congestion may be preventing a fast enough
stream. So that viewers don't miss out, the audio stream
has been set to a preference, as this takes less bandwidth
than video.
I have accessibility difficulties:
will I still be able to use this site?
The site is designed to comply with most Government
recommendations whilst still creating a visually attractive
informative environment. The visually impaired will
be able to hear the webcast and benefit from text-to-speech
reader compliance. Reports and speeches are being made
available for reading by the hard of hearing.

Podcasting F.A.Q.s
Why don't
I need an iPod or MP3 player to view/listen to the
podcasts?
If you download
iTunes from Apple's website for free to your
own desktop system you can use its built-in viewer
to watch and listen to the podcasts without an iPod.

What
is iTunes?
iTunes is a free music and video player from Apple.
It's available for both PC (Windows) and Mac and you can
use it to watch and listen to podcasts. You can also use
it to listen to your own CDs, or buy legal download music
from the iTunes Music Store. Whilst you're downloading
iTunes you may also be offered to download the latest
version of QuickTime. QuickTime allows you to view higher
quality videos, but at smaller file sizes: a bonus!
The link you've given me
doesn't work. What now?
If you don't have iTunes installed on your computer
then the link may not work. Download
iTunes 6 from Apple to fix this.
How can I tell people to find
the podcast?
In iTunes, go to the
iTunes Music Store and type "General Assembly"
into the search bar. The podcast should show up in the
top few results shown. Although it's in the iTunes Music
Store, it doesn't cost anything to listen to.
How can I make sure I get
all the daily updates?
Once you're viewing the podcast, simply click on the
"subscribe" button to automatically receive
the updates as and when they are available.
What if I don't want to use
iTunes?
You can use specialised podcast reader software if you
wish. This configuration is not supported by us however
as the configuration of such software is beyond the
scope of this web page. If you feel have the technical
ability then you will need the RSS podcast feed URL
which is
http://stream2.churchofscotland.org.uk/
podcasting/ga06/index.xml
You will have to ensure that the entire
(both lines) of the above address are copied and pasted.
