Joel and Fiona Hafvenstein both grew up in Nepal, where their parents served with United Mission to Nepal (UMN). Ten years after both families left the country they met again and married in London in 2006, and now have two sons, Caleb (3) and Isaac (1). Joel's work in poverty relief includes 3.5 years in Afghanistan and Fiona has worked for an international reforestation agency and documented traditional medicinal plants in India and Afghanistan.
From 2008, Joel worked with the Christian charity Tearfund, as their Afghanistan field director, then as an advisor on disaster resilience, and finally as the Geographic Head for the Middle East and Latin America. Joel, along with Fiona and their sons, has now returned to Nepal and is serving as Executive Director of UMN.
