General Assembly 2008: New climate change initiatives
on Iona
The Iona Community's report will tell the General Assembly
about the new climate change initiatives on the island.
The community decided to join Christian Aid's Climate
Change Campaign, and is aiming to reducing its energy
consumption by 5% each year. It has also encouraged
other churches across Scotland to sign up for the scheme
and to prevent environmental damage.
The Assembly will also hear about the Community's "Place
focus", which has led it to consider how best to
incorporate accountability for our use of the earth's
resources into its Rule.
Thanks to financial support from the Parish Development
Fund, the Jacob Project has progressed again this year
and is set for an official launch soon. The project
offers young offenders positive alternatives to re-offending,
and is run in conjunction with Polmont Young Offenders
Institution.
The report also mentioned the partnership in place
with Religious Education Movement in Scotland, which
has led to an increase in schools' work. The work of
the youth department has also included major events
such as the Greenbelt Festival in Cheltenham.
The report also highlighted that the web sales arm
of Wild Goose Publications (www.ionabooks.com) has continued
to grow, and they are now embarking on a major project
of digitisation. There were also a dozen new titles
published during the last year, including "The
Singing Thing Too" by John Bell.
The Iona Community continues to grow ecumenically and
internationally, with 284 full members, and roughly
1800 associate members worldwide.
