Dundee Presbytery raises £13,000 for HIV charity
| DUNDEE Presbytery has answered a personal plea from the Moderator by raising £13,000 for an HIV charity.
Last May, Right Reverend Bill Hewitt, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, urged every Presbytery to raise £10,000 for its HIV/AIDS Project - branding it the "Moderator's Challenge". |
 The Moderator |
Tayside churches have risen to the call and a cheque for £13,000 will be presented to Mr Hewitt tomorrow night at a special ceremony in Dundee's McManus Galleries.
Fundraising activities included a "big sing" on Pentecost Sunday, a joint carol service and a sponsored cycle across the Tay Bridge with participants from 15 congregations taking part.
The Moderator said: "It is excellent to see the imagination which Dundee's churches have brought to their awareness-raising and fundraising for the Church of Scotland HIV/AIDS Project.
"It is clear that everyone involved worked very hard and it is a tremendous amount of money which will go to the project.
"I hope the congregations involved can better understand the issues around HIV in Scotland and this would allow the church to care and support more effectively."
Tomorrow's ceremony also marks the start of the Moderator's nine-day visit to Dundee Presbytery.
The Moderator will meet with officials from the digital industry, local politicians and representatives from Ninewells Hospital.
He will preach at Broughty Ferry New Kirk on Sunday morning, and Chalmers Ardler Church in the evening
Ends.
