The best job in the Church

Lewis Rose reveals his passion for pastoral work, and a new title and website for industrial chaplains

Scottish industrial chaplains have a new name to keep up with the modern vibrant workforce - Work Place Chaplaincy Scotland.

To complement the new organisational name, Lewis Rose, national co-ordinator, launched the new website at the start of this month, www.wpcSCOTLAND.co.uk.

He felt the old title was out of touch:

"We have to move with the times, when you mention industrial work you think of the 60s, things like steel work and coal mining.

"We provide a chaplaincy service to businesses all over Scotland. Our primary objective is to support staff in whatever way they feel necessary, and we feel the new title highlights our inclusiveness, and the need for interfaith relations.

"I am delighted to work with other religions. If we can't work with our brothers or sisters of faith then what chance do we have?"

There are currently nine chaplains throughout Scotland, four of which are employed by the Church of Scotland.

In addition, there are over 50 voluntary chaplains ranging from the Shetlands to the Borders. Their pastoral care is available to workers in shopping centres, airports and even power stations.

Lewis also spoke of how much he enjoys his work:

"I really do believe I have the best job in the Church. I get to meet lots of different people, but the difference is they really want to see me.

"At church, sometimes there can be a sense of obligation to be there, and there can be a feeling of a separation between the minister and the congregation too.

"But I think people see me on the same level as them, we really are no different, if anything we are honoured guests in their workplace."

Ends.
