WEBSITE
Overview
Established in the year 2000, the Church of Scotland's
website was set up to provide an information and resource
base for our work, faith and mission on a worldwide basis.
In 2003, and again in 2006, the website underwent massive
transformations. The first redesign in 2003 reflected
the legal accessibility requirements of the Disability
Discrimination Act, which also refers to websites. Our
site was refreshed and a new crisp, clean design unveiled.
 |
In 2006, following the significant
changes to the internal workings of the Church at
administration level which were ratified at the
2005 General Assembly, the website was rewritten
and restructured to reflect this. |
More emphasis was put on collated faith, worship, mission
and action information and resources for people new to
and discovering the Church rather than the site being
based around the structure of the former boards and committees
- which made it somewhat daunting for users new to navigate
round.
At the same time as this restructure, a new extranet site was launched to provide
a dedicated facility for those who already have an understanding
and knowledge of the organisation and our structure.
As all information on this extranet site is in the public
domain in a bid to ensure the culture of openness in
the Kirk, this site is not password protected.
The site today
The Church of Scotland website today has more than 1,000
individual web pages offering an indepth insight into
our faith, mission and work. Our central Worship
on the Web pages have up-to-the-minute suggested worship
material and guide to Christian festivals, while our revamped
councils and committees areas offer an overview of the
work and remit of the departments of the Church.
In 2005 we enjoyed a two million hit rate with users
from more than 200 countries worldwide including the
UK, USA, Poland, Lebanon, Australia, Bermuda, Canada,
France, Japan, Israel and Kyrgyzstan. This figure is
already on target to increase significantly again in
2006.
The website team
Information and updates for the website come from Church
of Scotland departments, councils and committees via the
Media Relations Unit which manages, supports and edits
the main site and extranet facility. Pat Holdgate, head
of media relations, is also the website manager.
The CrossReach website, available at www.crossreach.org.uk
is managed independently by the Social Care Council.
