Whether you are attending the General Assembly as a commissioner, or just happen to be in the capital from Thursday 15 to Wednesday 21 May 2008, the Church of Scotland invites you to enjoy some of the many Kirk fringe events listed below taking place in Edinburgh during the week.

The events will take place in the Assembly Hall and New College on the Mound as well as throughout the city and are in addition to the Church's exhibition and bookstall in the Martin Hall, New College, adjacent to the Assembly Hall. The Assembly Hall is accessible from either the Royal Mile or via Mound Place.

Meet the Trustees and Managers of the Investors Trust
Time: 12.30 - 2.00pm

The Investors Trust offers simple and economical facilities for congregations to invest in its three Funds. Investors receive the benefits of professional management, continuous portfolio supervision, spread of investment risk and economies of scale.

The Chairman of the Investors Trust will open the meeting and the Funds' Managers will each give a short presentation followed by a brief Question and Answer Session. Thereafter, a buffet lunch will be available and the Trustees and the Managers will be in attendance to provide further information.

Kinsfolk Carers - keeping caring in the family Time: 12.30 - 2.00pm

Kinsfolk Carers Edinburgh is a group for grandparents and other close family members who care for children affected by parental substance abuse, neglect or bereavement. This seminar will explain the role of a carer when parents are unable to look after their children due to drug or alcohol abuse and also on what (if any) financial help is available. This seminar is supported by the Social Care Council (CrossReach).

A buffet lunch will be provided.

Mr Alex Fergusson MSP, Presiding Officer at the Scottish Parliament, will be talking on the topic of 'The Challenges Facing Rural Communities'.

Climate Change - The Kirk's Concern?
Time: 12.45 - 1.45pm

You are invited to come and hear Bishop Paul Sarker, (Church of Bangladesh), Adrian Shaw, Climate Change Officer (Church of Scotland), and Marjorie Clark (Christian Aid).

At a time when the issue of climate change is high on the world agenda, where do we as a church see ourselves and how can we be involved? Is the Kirk ready to face the challenge of addressing climate change?

Bishop Paul will address the effects of climate change from a personal perspective as he ministers in a situation directly affected. Adrian will share the strategic direction of the Kirk and Marjorie will inspire us to be proactive as individuals and congregations. An open discussion with the panel will follow.

CSW is a human rights organisation, which specialises in religious freedom and works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs and promotes religious liberty for all. This is an opportunity to hear about the persecution of Christians in different countries round our world, but with a particular focus on Nigeria, N Korea and Eritrea. Threads lunch (first come-first served basis)
Have you ever wondered what to do with folks after an Alpha Course? Do you find that people don't really understand their place in the Church of Scotland? Struggling to find a resource that will help the body of Christ grow and mature? Help is at hand from the Mission and Discipleship Council in the form of a new DVD resource, Threads, which will be available from the autumn of this year. The programme is interactive and story-based and focuses on the lives of real people in the real Church of Scotland. It is designed to get people thinking and talking and will help everyone who takes part to learn more about themselves, their church and their faith.

The Vine Trust will be once again be holding a special evening for Commissioners.The annual 10 day Church leaders vision trip to Peru in January 2009 is being co-led this year by Very Rev Dr David and Mrs Joan Lacy and the Rev Albert Bogle.

The meeting will give a fascinating multi-media insight into the proposed trip and how your congregation can become involved. Come along to hear first hand reports on how previous colleagues have been inspired and how their congregations have benefited from this unique project.

In previous years the visit has been eligible under the Church study leave programme.

You are invited to celebrate with the two winning entries of the Stevenson Prize, this year awarded for excellence in Religious Observance. Come along and see some of the work that the judging panel thought merited this prestigious prize. Speak to the children and teachers who produced such excellent examples of Religious Observance in our Scottish schools.
