REPORT by The CHURCH HYMNARY TRUSTEES (A registered Scottish charity; Scottish Charity No SCO02769) to the GENERAL ASSEMBLIES OF THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND and UNITED FREE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND in respect of year ending 31 December 2007 …………………………….. 1 CHURCH HYMNARY 4TH EDITION As was to be expected, the sales of the 4th Edition of the Church Hymnary dropped off during 2007. In the year to 30 September 2007 27,334 copies (2005-06 - 75,573) of the hymnary in its various editions were sold. Following on representations about the weight of the hymnary, the Trust introduced in 2007 a words only edition. 17,849 copies of it were sold. 2683 copies of the full Music Edition (2006 - 4091), 3542 copies of the large print edition (2006 - 11,399) and 3264 copies of the Melody edition (2006 – 60,083) were sold. Commission due to the Trust calculated in respect of the year to 30 September 2007 was £27,888 (2006 - £63,877.96). The level of royalties paid to the authors was £22,318 (2006 - £50,473.70) 2 CHURCH HYMNARY 3RD EDITION About 100 copies of the Church Hymnary 3rd Edition in various editions were sold in the year to 31 December 2007. Royalties earned were £98.25. 3 CD ROM Following on negotiations between the publishers and the copyright holders, it has regrettably proved impossible to produce an economic version of a CD rom with words and music. The proposed CD rom will display an image of the page of the book in a browser from which the text only will be selectable. All texts will be readable on screen for study purposes but not copyable or exportable without a CCLI Licence being held when this is required. Searches will be available by author, composer, hymn number and tune name. To make best use of it, individual churches will require to have a CCLI Licence. The cost of the CD rom is anticipated at about £27 with VAT in addition. 4 CHRISTIAN COPYRIGHT LICENCE INTERNATIONAL The Trust has now arranged for registration of all items under the copyright of the Trust with Christian Copyright Licence International. This does not constitute registration of all the contents of CH4 as the copyright in most of the items is held by individuals or trusts. This now enables churches holding CCLI Licences to make use of Trust material in terms of their licence. The Trust is at the final stages of registering its material with Hymn Quest. 5 STATE OF FUNDS The Trustees have decided that the gross royalties received from both hymnaries will be distributed to the constituent churches. They are of the view that there are sufficient funds available to deal with the production of the CD rom. 6 TRUSTEES The Reverend Dr A Stewart Todd intimated his wish to retire from the Trust. Dr Todd has been a Trustee since 1965 and has been a most valued and diligent member of the Trust. He was on the Revision Committee for CH3 and has always been willing to share his wide knowledge with the Trustees. The Trustees wish to record their thanks and appreciation for his 43 years of service to the Trust. 7 TRUST The Trust has responded wherever possible to suggestions made by the Church in connection with the hymnary. The Trust occupies a unique position in that it is independent of its constituent churches, but seeks to co-operate fully with them. George W Penrose Chairman John M Hodge Secretary & Treasurer
