Church and Society Council

Church of Scotland emblem

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Church and Society Council.

History

This council, created on 1 June 2005, took on responsibility for the former committees on Church and Nation; Education; the Scottish Churches' Parliamentary Office; the Society Religion and Technology Project, and Social Interests from the former Board of Social Responsibility.

The previous Church and Nation Committee had existed since 1919 to keep under review all aspects of the development of the nation's life and to recommend ways in which the Church of Scotland can act in the highest interests of the people of Scotland.

Work and remit

The new Church and Society Council's central remit is to continue the tradition of engaging, on behalf of the Church, in the national, political and social issues affecting Scotland and the world today - from asylum and ecological concerns to adoption and education issues.

It aims to do this through the development of theological, ethical and spiritual perspectives when formulating policy and by effectively representing the Church by offering appropriate and informed comments.

The council is also charged with building, establishing and maintaining a series of networks and relationships with leaders and key people in society and engaging in longer-term dialogue and the exchange of ideas with them.

The council is committed to supporting the local church in its mission and own engagement with influence-shapers in society by offering professional and accessible resources on a range of contemporary issues.

As part of its remit the Church and Society Council is expected to conduct an annual review of progress made in these areas and report to the Council of Assembly with its findings.
