The Stop AIDS Campaign
The Stop AIDS Campaign is the campaigning arm of the UK
Consortium on AIDS and International Development – a coalition
of over 80 NGOs and Trade Unions promoting effective responses
to the HIV pandemic.
They are calling for ambitious action in three main
areas:
- Finance Universal Access:
Commit at least £2.5bn over three years to ensure
that the UK pays its fair share of global resources
needed to achieve Universal Access by 2010.
- Reduce the prices of essential
medicines: Promote generic medicines by tackling
trade barriers and developing a patent pool for essential
medicines.
- Strengthen Health Systems:
Address the health worker shortage and provide longterm
financing to strengthen services and infrastructure.

'Destination Unknown' Campaign
The African HIV Policy Network (AHPN) is currently campaigning to prevent the deportation of people living with HIV who are on treatment to countries where it is not readily available or affordable. The withdrawal of treatment increases the body's vulnerability to opportunistic infection and will result in drastically shortened life expectancy.
According to APHN, there is a clear contradiction between these deportations and the UK’s policy aim of universal access to HIV treatment for all those who need it by 2010.
The AHPN believes that there are strong public health arguments for allowing a concession. Those awaiting removal may go underground and fail to keep appointments resulting in an increased risk of opportunistic infection with the need for emergency treatment and an increased risk of onward transmission.
The Department of Health has valued the prevention of one single onward transmission as between £0.5 and £1 million in terms of individual health benefits and treatment costs.
The "Destination Unknown" campaign is calling on the Home Office to delay the deportation of people living with HIV, who are on treatment, from the United Kingdom until HIV treatment becomes more widely available and accessible. It is aiming to get a 1000 signatures, which will then be presented to the Home Office which, it is hoped, will take into consideration the voices of people calling for access to HIV treatment for all people abroad but also in the UK.
You can support the campaign by signing the online petition at www.gopetition.com/petitions/access-to-lifesaving-hiv-treatment/sign.html,
or contact the HIV/AIDS Project for copies of the petition.
