World Mission Council

Our remit

The World Mission Council is the channel through which the Church of Scotland responds to the command of Jesus: "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation" (Mark 16:15). We work in countries around the world, usually on the basis of partnership with local churches and institutions, and always with a view to involving church members in Scotland. The cultivation of two-way partnerships ('Twinnings') between congregations overseas and congregations in Scotland not only creates friendships but expands horizons.

Taking the first steps towards connecting with people in different countries can be the beginning of an exciting and life-changing relationship. Discover challenges people face every day; experience their heart and resilience; share in the joy of giving and receiving.

Our work

You can find out more about our work by following the links below.

  • Mission worldwide - We work in many countries worldwide, including Bangladesh, China, Israel and Palestine, Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan and Zambia. Read some of the blogs written by our mission partners.
  • Get involved / Special initiatives - There are many ways for individuals, groups and congregations to support the work of the World Mission Council and everything you do makes a difference. Each year the council has special initiatives which tackle particular issues raised by our partner churches.
  • Projects and partnerships - Many of our congregations are involved in one of the projects being run by our partners, or support our mission partners. Many churches benefit from Twinning links with overseas congregations.
  • HIV Programme- The Programme raises funds to provide solidarity and practical support to those living with HIV around the world through its partnership with Church-related and other faith-based organisations.
  • Working around the world - The council recruits mission partners in response to requests received from our partner churches in Malawi, Zambia, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Israel/Palestine and Pakistan. Blogs written by some of our mission partners are listed at the side. It also provides advice on arranging an elective placement in a developing country as part of your medical degree.
