The National
Youth Assembly
National Youth Assembly 2008
The Church of Scotland annual Youth Assembly is for young
adults who have a connection to the Church and are aged
between 16 and 25. Youth workers are welcome to attend
the event with their young people if they want to support
them through the experience. Young people with a connection
to other churches in Scotland, the UK and overseas are
also welcome to attend.

This year's NYA took place in
Dundee from Friday 5 until
Monday 8 September 2008 at the Apex City
Quay Hotel. The event was called End
of Part One, and one of the issues covered was the sense that the planet is at an ending
and beginning.
The way of life the older generation
has known cannot be sustained in the future without
some radical changes to the way we live now, so
we condsidered the changes the younger generation
will have to make to the way they live to preserve
our planet. From a biblical point of view we looked at what happened after Jesus ascended to
heaven following his resurrection.
Guest speaker was Mark Yaconelli, a writer
on Youth Ministry from America.

The Youth Assembly 2006 took place from Friday 8 September
to Sunday 10 September at the City Quay Hotel, Dundee.
You can read a first-hand account of the event on our
archived fortnightly features pages online
here from delegate and guest writer Nicola Whyte from
Edinburgh. You can also download the minutes from the
2006 assembly below.
The National Youth Assembly gathered for prayer and worship.
Alison E. Thomson was Moderator, the Rev Dr Marjory MacLean
was clerk and Judith Taylor was depute clerk. The theme
of the Assembly was the bridging of the ‘gaps’
perceived to exist between the Gospel of Christ and contemporary
culture and belief in the Christian message and living
it out in practice. The debates focused on the remits
of the General Assembly’s new Councils, and the
initial priorities within the first year of their work.
During the National Youth Assembly a one-day re-union
meeting was held of the children’s ambassadors to
the General Assembly of 2005. Renaming themselves ‘The
Junior Youth Assembly’, they discussed the format
of future events, and engaged in debate on themes raised
by the Ministries Council and the Mission and Discipleship
Council.
A summary of the the 2005 event and their conclusion is
available to download below in Word [.doc], rich text
[.rtf] and text only [.txt] formats.
2007 is the year in which local churches
get the chance to reconsider how to work with young
people. In November 2006 every congregation was
sent copies of a resource booklet containing all
the information required to help them work out a
new plan for youth work. You can download a copy
of this booklet below in [.pdf] or text only [.txt]
formats. Please note that this is a very large file
and, at 24 image-heavy page, will take some considerable
time to download on a standard connection. If your
system cannot receive this file easily, please email
the department to request a hard copy of the
booklet. You can also order some of the Strategy
for Young People resources, including data cards
and wrist bands, using the following order form.
