Churches to visit Edinburgh Prison

To mark Prisoners' Week, which runs from 16th to 23rd November, and at the invitation of the Governor-in-Charge, Mr Nigel Ironside, a group from the Presbytery of Edinburgh will be visiting Edinburgh Prison on Monday 17th November.

The group, representing the Churches of Scotland in Edinburgh, will led by the Presbytery Moderator, the Revd Andrew Anderson, minister of Greenside Church. He will be accompanied by the Revd Dr Derek Browning, Convener of the Business Committee and minister of Morningside Church, the Revd Mark Foster, Convener of the Social and Community Interests Committee and minister of Dean Church, and the Revd Keith Graham, minister of Stenhouse St Aidan's Church which is the parish church covering Edinburgh Prison.

In addition to the Governor, the group will meet the prison managers, members of staff and the chaplains, as well as touring the prison and meeting prisoners. Mr Anderson has been invited to take part in a service of worship in the evening.

Mr Anderson said, 'We are really excited at this proposed visit. We want to learn about the important issues surrounding the work of the Scottish Prison Service in the difficult circumstances that we know prevail today, as well as offering support to the Governor and his staff, chaplains and the prisoners themselves. The Presbytery represents many people who live and work in our city and we feel it is very important that we do all we can to promote understanding and integration in the different parts of our varied community.'

Prisoners' Week is an opportunity to remember all in our communities who are affected by crime and imprisonment – prisoners and their families, victims of crime and those who work with the criminal justice system. It is an initiative of the Churches that aims to stimulate discussion and highlight concerns.
