EMERGING CHURCH, EMERGING MINISTRIES

New church for a new Scotland, and the church has left the building: café church, youth church, nursing home church, bikers church - God's Spirit is firing our imagination and preparing people to serve as pioneer ministers in a variety of contexts and situations.

Emerging church explores a more incarnational model of church - going to people in their different neighbourhoods and networks, building friendships and community, and seeing if some of these communities have the potential for being church, rather than wait until those outside the church come to us.

This is a joint venture between the Ministries Council and Mission and Discipleship who are collaborating in an innovative way to enable the Church of Scotland to face the challenges of ministry and mission in today's world. It's experimental, but it's a challenge, it can be great fun, and it's responding to God's call.

A special Emerging Church event was held during the General Assembly 2009 with speaker Bishop Graham Cray, Archbishops' Adviser for Fresh Expressions of Church in the Church of England. You can watch his address by visiting our webcast pages.

Emerging Ministries Fund

Some of the early Christians were scattered like seeds in the breeze. Where they took root, they shared the Good News and gathered a new Christian community. When Barnabas came to see the work of those anonymous seed-bearers (acts 11:23) in
establishing new forms of church, he saw God's grace. As a result He gave support and encouragement which helped the Church to develop.

In the role of Barnabas the Church of Scotland set up in 2008 an Emerging Ministries Fund to explore and encourage new patterns of Church around Scotland. After an initial starting sum of £100,000 in 2008, the Kirk has committed to an £300,000 annual fund from 2009 to 2013. The purpose of the Fund is:

  • Missional: it is to help reach out beyond the local congregation.
  • Ecclesial: it is to help establish new church groups.
  • Experimental: it is to help us learn what models of church life touch the needs of our cultures.

The Fund is available to presbyteries and congregations, and they can apply for grants in relation to a local or presbytery-wide need.

Applications to the fund will be considered by the Emerging Ministries Task Group throughout the year at their regular meetings.

For more information on how to apply, please see our contact details or read our guidance notes below.
